Our food in the future: The importance of agri-tech and sustainability

Sustainability of agriculture to maintain food security and enhancing the economic viability of rural communities.

Event Information

As part of ICAEW Midlands’ focus on sustainability, we are pleased to welcome James Lowenberg-DeBoer of Harper Adams University who will talk about the relevance of agri-tech to sustainability.

Agri-tech has an essential role to play in improving the sustainability of agriculture, while maintaining food security and enhancing the economic viability of rural communities.

This session will cover:

  • Agricultural technology - a broad category that includes the ways that humans have used to coax more food, fibre and fuel from biological systems, including improved seeds, pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Range of technology - in our technology-driven world, agri-tech describes the range of electronic and mechanical technologies in use in agriculture, such as global positioning system (GPS) guidance, satellite remote sensing, drones, machine vision and robots and automation.
  • Benefits – research at Harper Adams University shows that agri-tech could help UK farmers to lower the cost of production, reduce investment in farm equipment and enhance biodiversity.
  • The future - with the right legal, regulatory and policy environment, agri-tech could lay the basis for a new wave of rural entrepreneurship that becomes possible when human labour and attention are no longer the key constraints for farm businesses.
