Offshore Wind Opportunities

The UK is the global leader in offshore wind with as much capacity already installed as the rest of the world combined. With 30,000 jobs expected to be created in offshore wind over the next 8 years, UK manufacturers have huge scope for expansion.

The national offshore wind programme consists of over 40 projects with an estimated investment value of £80 – £100bn. DONG Energy, Statoil, Vattenfall, E.On and Galloper are all briefing the market about current build activities and Tier 1′s suppliers are starting to be announced which means there are an increasing number of live opportunities for manufacturers.

Siemens and the UK’s Associated British Ports recently announced a £310m investment in UK wind farm turbine factories. A number of industry leaders and Tier 1 manufacturers spoke with us about the opportunities for UK manufacturers:

To increase UK manufactured content supplied to offshore wind supply chains, the Government has committed funding to shape, launch and deliver a new service – GROW:OffshoreWind.  Delivered by experienced industry experts from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), RenewableUK, Grant Thornton and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, this service will offer English manufacturers a unique joined up package of consultancy, technology and funding support to help them deliver in this expanding market and benefit from this opportunity, specifically:

  • Manufacturing opportunity estimated to be up to £15bn market value
  • A potential £50bn annual global export market with opportunities in Asia, Europe and the US
  • A rapidly expanding industry that will create an estimated 30,000 jobs by 2021
  • Scope to develop high-value IP that is transferable to other renewable energy sectors
