What does the business do? 

Kirkstead Old Mill Cottage is a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast based in the village of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. Detached from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, their unique selling point is the abundance of nature and secluded location down by the River Witham.  

 

What’s the history? 

Self-employed since her teens, owner Barbara Hodgkinson has lived in Kirkstead Old Mill Cottage for 18 years. Passionate about Lincolnshire’s wildlife, she and her late husband decided to turn it into a B&B to share this love of nature with others, extending the building to allow for more guests. 

 

How have business Lincolnshire helped? 

Although Barbara was aware of changes in the way we communicate in the digital age, she didn’t feel as though she had a good grasp on digital marketing. She also felt overwhelmed by the prospect of putting together an official business plan, which she needed to apply for grants.  

Growth Hub advisor David Hawkins helped Barbara to put together a business plan, offering helpful suggestions to ensure her proposal was the best it could be. He also introduced Barbara to a range of digital courses, so she felt more confident in tackling elements such as social media and the B&B’s website.  

 

What’s next? 

Barbara intends to use her new found digital know-how to start marketing her business’s unique selling point online. She also credits Business Lincolnshire with opening her eyes to the many financial opportunities out there for small businesses, and she would encourage SMEs looking to expand to seek the advice and support that the Growth Hub has to offer.
