Overcoming the Top Barriers to Workplace Experiences:What’s Holding Your Business Back?

WEB ONLY SIZE FILE - SWP-NK EVENT 240124 (3)

Most businesses genuinely want to support the next generation, but when it comes to offering meaningful workplace experiences for young people, many find themselves unsure where to start. Despite the best intentions, a number of avoidable barriers often stand in the way of getting involved. Understanding and overcoming them is key to creating real impact, without needing huge amounts of time, budget, or complexity.

What are the Barriers?

One of the biggest barriers we hear from employers is uncertainty. It’s that feeling of “Where would we even begin?” or “Would what we do even be relevant?” And honestly, we get it. But the truth is, every business has something to offer. Sharing your story, how you got into your role, what your industry is really like, or what a typical day looks like, can be eye-opening for a young person.

If you’re up for it, there are easy ways to get involved. Give just one hour of your time either virtually or in person, to chat, mentor, or simply share your experiences.

Or, if you’d prefer, deliver a short talk in a school assembly. Either way, you’ll be helping students see what’s out there and maybe even spark something in them.

Time’s always tight, we know that. When you’re running a business, even an hour out of your day can feel like a big ask. And for many employers, there’s a worry that getting involved with schools means committing to weeks of work experience or complicated logistics. Thankfully, that’s not the case.

There are flexible, time-friendly ways to make a difference. From quick virtual sessions, like Q&As or online workplace tours, to short, focussed talks about your sector, it’s all designed to fit around your schedule. You could even invite a small school group in for a behind-the-scenes look at what you do – no big disruption, just real insight for young people who rarely get to see the working world up close.

Some businesses hold back because they think they’re too small to get involved. It’s easy to assume that only big-name companies or those with HR teams have something to offer. But young people need to see the full picture, including what it’s like to work in local firms, family-run businesses, or ambitious startups.

Your story, your journey, and your day-to-day reality might be exactly what inspires someone.
