The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has recently released guidance on the upcoming ban of single-use plastics in England. Starting from 1st October 2023, businesses will be prohibited from supplying, selling, or offering certain single-use plastic items.
The ban encompasses various aspects, including online and over-the-counter sales, existing and new stock, and all types of single-use plastic, regardless of whether they are biodegradable, compostable, or recycled. It also covers items made entirely or partly from plastic, including those with plastic coatings or linings.
To comply with the new regulations, businesses are advised to utilise their existing stock before the deadline, such as cutlery and plates and explore reusable alternatives to single-use items, and consider using alternative materials for their products.
Failure to adhere to the ban may result in fines for businesses continuing to supply banned single-use plastics after October 1st. Certain exemptions exist based on specific items.
This move aims to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices in England, aligning with global efforts to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment.
