FOAK Builder: Programme Entry Expression of Interest
Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is investing through the Climate Tech FOAK Builder pilot programme to help high-potential climate technology businesses prepare First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) commercial projects for investment and deployment. The programme is designed for late-stage climate tech SMEs approaching first commercial deployment and aligns with the UK’s industrial strategy priorities.
This competition is the first phase of a two-stage programme. Rather than directly funding project delivery, it provides successful applicants with tailored support to strengthen project credibility, coordination and investment readiness. Businesses can receive funded assistance worth up to £315,000, including expert advisory services, technical assistance, mentoring, upskilling support and strategic development planning.
Successful companies will work with Innovate UK and a Technical Assistance Supplier to develop a FOAK Development Plan and a FOAK Support Plan. These plans may include project governance structures, budgeting, scheduling, risk management and stakeholder engagement activities to help projects progress towards Final Investment Decision (FID).
The competition is open to single UK-registered SMEs developing qualifying climate technology projects. Businesses that successfully complete this stage may be invited to apply for more substantial Phase 2 grant funding.
