One month left for importers to move to single customs platform

Published on: 22/09/2022

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging businesses to move to their new Customs Declaration Service.

The UK’s new customs platform is a secure digital platform replacing the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF).

CHIEF will close in two phases

  • Phase one: after 30 September 2022, the ability to make import declarations will end
  •  Phase two: after 31 March 2023, the ability to make export declarations will end

Import declarations must be submitted through the new Customs Declaration Service from 1 October this year when it takes over from the Customs Handling Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system for import declarations.

Further information about using the Customs Declaration Service is available on GOV.UK, including a Customs Declaration Service toolkit and checklists, which breaks down the steps traders need to take – click here for more.
