UK Government Urges SMEs to ‘Lock the Door’ on Cyber Criminals as New Campaign Launches

cyber

Businesses across Greater Lincolnshire are being urged to take simple, affordable steps to strengthen their cyber defences as the UK Government launches a new national awareness campaign.

The initiative comes as fresh data reveals the scale of the threat facing UK businesses, with cyber-attacks costing an estimated £14.7 billion a year and half of all small firms experiencing an incident in the last 12 months (GOV.UK 2025).

The campaign, led by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), aims to give time‑pressed business owners clear actions they can take immediately. Central to the initiative is encouraging organisations to adopt the government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme, which outlines simple steps such as keeping software updated and controlling user access.

Organisations certified under Cyber Essentials made 92% fewer cyber insurance claims last year (GOV.UK 2026).

For Greater Lincolnshire SMEs, the message is especially important. Smaller firms often assume they are too low-profile to attract attention from cyber criminals, but experts warn this is a dangerous misconception.

"Many small business owners assume their business is too small to be on cyber criminals’ radar, but in reality, we know most attackers don’t care about size, reputation or logos – they are looking for opportunity and weaknesses."

NCSC CEO Dr Richard Horne

With cyber incidents costing an average of £195,000 per attack (GOV.UK 2025), even a single breach can threaten a company’s stability. By adopting straightforward measures, many of which require little specialist knowledge, local businesses can significantly reduce their risk.

For businesses in Greater Lincolnshire seeking to protect jobs, productivity and customer confidence, this campaign offers a timely reminder: improving cyber resilience isn’t just a technical task, it’s essential business practice.
